Golden Scholars - Class of 1959

Each year, the UH Alumni Association honors UH graduates who are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their UH graduation by welcoming them into a special circle of alumni called the Golden Scholars. This year, UHAA honored the Class of 1959 with a reunion on the UH Manoa campus on Dec. 9. The event began with a docent-guided tour of the alumni invitational art exhibit called, Degrees of Distinction. It was followed by a short narrated bus tour of upper campus, a walking tour of Frear Hall and the athletics facilities and a reception at the UH Letterwinners Clubhouse. The night concluded with the men's basketball game against Chaminade, hosted by UH Athletics. Photos by Stacia Garlach.

Road Warrior Tailgate at San Jose State

Alumni in the Bay Area held several gatherings to charge fans up for the San Jose State game on Nov. 21. On game day Road Warriors tailgated at Spartan Stadium before cheering the Warriors on to a 17-10 victory in an overtime thriller. All events were co-sponsored by the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California, the UH Alumni Association, Rainbowtique and Na Koa Football Club. Photos by Patrick Bullard and Michael Helms.

2009 Homecoming Tailgate & Game

UHAA and benefit partner GEICO hosted this year's Homecoming Tailgate at Aloha Stadium on Nov. 7 before the Warrior's 49-36 victory over Utah State. The first 300 tailgaters were given free bags with spirit items and a coupon for a free hot dog and soda. This year, UHAA and GEICO sponsored an additional student bus and coordinated all 12 campus buses to drop off at the tailgate. Photos by Cliff Bieberly & Stacia Garlach.

2009 UHAA Service Awards

The UH Alumni Association presented its three service awards at games during UH Manoa Homecoming 2009 weekend, Nov. 6-8. "We feel it's important to acknowledge our chapters and partner organizations for all they do to strengthen our alumni association," said Janet Bullard, UHAA executive director.

2009 UH Manoa Homecoming Celebration

Alumni, students, faculty and staff gathered on Bachman Lawn for the 2nd Annual UH Manoa Homecoming Celebration on Nov. 6 to build excitement for a weekend of winning. In addition to the main stage, there were booths for food, games, and student organizations, and lots of prize giveaways. Afterward fans headed over to Stan Sheriff Center to cheer the No. 3 Wahine volleyball team onto a sweeping victory over Fresno State, 25-19, 25-11, 25-13. 2009 College of Engineering Homecoming Celebration

More than 400 alumni and friends of the UH Manoa College of Engineering gathered on the grounds near Holmes Hall for the 2nd annual College of Engineering Homecoming Celebration on Nov. 4. In addition to catching up with one another, guests were treated to a poker tournament, a karaoke contest and fabulous food provided by well-known island chef, D.K. Kodama, of d.k. Road Warriors: UNLV Tailgate
10/6/2009

UH fans are a special breed. Despite a 101-degree high on Sept. 19 in Las Vegas, 2,500 fans turned out for the UNLV tailgate. Amy Hanaiali'i serenaded the crowd, as folks enjoyed Hawaiian food at the party across from the California Hotel & Casino. UHAA held a drawing at its membership table for a trip to Kaua'i, and Kelly Nakano '05 was the lucky winner. Many thanks to California Hotel & Casino for hosting the tailgate; Hawaiian Airlines, Sheraton Kauai Resort and Dollar Rent A Car for making the Kauai'i trip giveaway possible; and to Phyllis Matsuda, president of the UHAA-Las Vegas/Southern Nevada chapter, and all chapter volunteers. UHAA-San Francisco/Bay Area Alumni Reception

UH alumni and friends in San Francisco/Bay Area held an alumni reception at la mar cebicheria on Sept. 14. More than 70 turned out for the event, thanks to the UHAA-San Francisco/Bay Area chapter's new Facebook page. Larry A. Beil '83 emceed the event, and Kalae Miles provided the evening's entertainment. Road Warriors: WSU Tailgate 2009

More than 450 UH alumni and friends gathered at Safeco Field to build enthusiasm for the Warriors. It worked - the team scored a 38-20 win over Washington State on Sept. 12 at Qwest Field in Seattle. Stephen "Braddah" Gomes '83 emceed the event, Kaulele entertained the crowd, and special guest speakers were UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, Athletics Director Jim Donovan and UH Alumni Association Executive Director Janet Bullard. The UH cheerleaders were on hand to fire up fans, and Rainbowtique sold spirit merchandise. UHAA and partner GEICO gave away logo items, and the GEICO Gecko made an appearance. Special thanks to Wayne Okimoto and Dawn Mallory, UHAA-Pacific Northwest chapter president, and all the PNW chapter volunteers who assisted with decorating, registration and the UHAA membership table. 2009 Distinguished Alumni Awards - PART1

More than 600 University of Hawai'i alumni and friends gathered on May 7 at the Sheraton Waikiki to honor the 2009 UH Distinguished Alumni Award honorees and benefit UHAA and its scholarship fund. This year's winners are Dr. Chiyome Fukino (MD '79); Dr. James (MA '69) and Dr. Lois (MA '69) Horton; Dee Jay Mailer (BS '75, MBA '85); and Sabrina McKenna (BA '78, JD '82). The UH Founders Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Daniel Lau (BA '41). The UHAA President's Award was given to David and Wendie McClain. Engineering Centennial 2008
11/11/2008

Good food, good spirits and good company set the tone for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Engineering Centennial Homecoming Celebration on Oct. 7, 2008, at the Stan Sheriff Center. More than 600 alumni and friends of the college gathered to enjoy culinary creations from 12 well-known local chefs, including D.K. Kodama, Hiroshi Fukui and Donato Loperfido. Guests were also treated to a comical rendition of Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" performed by none other than UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, who donned Turner's trademark mane. She was accompanied in good fun by UH President David McClain, Engineering Dean Peter Crouch, Warrior Head Football Coach Greg McMackin and the Foundation Vice President of Development Kathy Nelson. Homecoming Football & Letterwinners Award

During halftime at the Homecoming football game, UHAA presented its 2008 Community Service Award to the UH Letterwinners Club. The week closed the following day with a Wahine Volleyball game against New Mexico, where UHAA gave its Partner Recognition Award to AIG Hawaii.

UHAA Golf Tournament - Registration & Lunch

The 3rd Annual UH Alumni Association Homecoming Golf Tournament at Hawaii Prince Golf Course on Oct. 8, 2008, was hosted by the UH Army ROTC Alumni Association Chapter. As part of the UH Manoa Homecoming Week festivities, the tournament provided a unique opportunity to pay tribute to all UH alumni who have bravely served our country. Before the tournament, a short ceremony honored the six UH ROTC graduates who lost their lives in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan: Tom Blevins, Frank Rodriguez, Brian Kong, Jeremy Wolfe, Nainoa Hoe and Jonathan Brostrom. There was an official posting of the colors before tee-off, and Marlene Sai sang the National Anthem. UH ROTC cadets were on hand to assist with the event, and raised more than $6,000 for their club at the par 3 challenges. Kimo Kahoano emceed the opening ceremony and performed with his trio while the golfers enjoyed Kevin "Two-Boots" Tate's delicious gumbo before they teed off. More than 80 people gathered for the inauguration of the UHAA-Japan Chapter on March 30 at the Oakwood Premier Hotel in Tokyo.
